The Sacred - Short Film

Throughout this year i’ve been working on composing the score for the beautiful short film ‘The Sacred’ directed by Megan Donnelly.

In her own words this is what The Sacred is about:

The Sacred is a magical realist film about a young couple’s experience of unexpected trauma and the potential of healing through nature.

The story provides a fresh take on the archetypal feminine and on female desire, power and spirituality as expressed in myths, fairytales, religion and art.

The Australian gothic genre arises from settler colonist cultures’ exploitative relationship to nature and country. The Sacred asks those of us who are products of this culture if we are ready to recognise again our symbiosis with nature: our true selves.

With this in mind I aimed to create a soft, organic and evocative score featuring solo piano, strings and women’s vocals. I had a lot of fun creating a theme for both the spiritual aspect of the film and the young couple and seeing how they could be blended with each throughout the story.

The film will be premiered at the end of November at the Canberra Short Film Festival and i’m excited to be able to share the score soon.
