HIATUS - BROSIS FILM

Yesterday was the online premiere of ‘Hiatus’ - a beautiful short film produced by Brosis.

This was one of my favourite projects to work on last year and i’m very excited to be able to share it :)

Here’s what I had to say about composing the score:

When Anita approached me to score her film Hiatus, she basically gave me a composers dream - a beautiful film with no dialogue!

This was an interesting and engaging project for me as firstly I hadn’t composed music to a dance that had already been choreographed and secondly it was filmed in Hong Kong where my family is from and so I was able to use traditional sounds and perhaps connect with it on a deeper level than some of my other projects.Apart from just matching the music to the dance I wanted the melodies and emotion of the score to reflect the relationship between father and daughter.

There is a lot of tension and sadness, but also a sense of yearning, release and acceptance and I really tried to create a score that tells the story of their emotional journeys together. The violin represents the voice of the daughter and the cello the father. Throughout you can hear how each takes turn in leading the music, in line with the dance and how they ask each other questions, come together at time but also push each other away

Throughout the score there are traditional Chinese instruments, such as the Erhu and Guzheng which can be heard throughout. It is quite special to be able to collaborate on something that I can connect with on a deeper level than just being a composer and I really enjoyed working with Brosis Films to bring Hiatus to life
